History of the NFC East Team
Last I talked the AFC North teams. Usually, I would stay in the same conference. Since we have lots of Washington Redskins and Dallas Cowboy fan in the area, I’m going to do the NFC East next. Some people think the Dallas Cowboys used to be the Dallas Texans and the Washington Redskins originated in Washington. Carefully read this content and you can learn something about the history of your football team. To me, if you don’t know the history of your football team then you’re not really a fan. If you want to know the history of the AFC North teams than read the post before this one. My Baltimore Ravens are in that division. Don’t worry I am not going to put down your team even if I don’t like them. I’m going to tell you the brief true fact about your football team. Since I live in the Baltimore and Washington area, I’m going to start off by talking about the Washington Redskins. Even though I hate the Redskins there is not going to be any negative things I’m going to say. I’m just going to talk history about them and what’s currently going on. The NFC East consists of the Washington Redskins, Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles, and the New York Giants. Those are the team I’m going to be talking about on this post.

Fight song: Hail to the Redskins
The Washington Redskins is an American football team that is based in the Washington DC (District of Columbia) metropolitan area. The Redskins compete in the National Football League (NFL) in the National Football Conference (NFC) East. They play their home games at FedEx Field which is located in Landover, Maryland (MD). Their headquarters and training facility is located at Inova Sports Performance Center at Redskins Park in Ashburn, Virginia (VA) and the Redskins Complex in Richmond, VA.
The Redskins played more one thousand games since the founding in 1932. They are one of five franchises in the NFL that recorded over six hundred wins in the regular season and the postseasons. The Redskins won over five NFL Championships including three Super Bowls. They have captured 14 divisional titles and six conference championships. The Redskins are the first NFL franchise that has a marching band and the first with a team fight song called Hail to the Redskins.
The Redskins began in 1932 as the Boston Braves. Then became the Redskins the following year. In 1937, they relocated to Washington, DC. The Redskins won the 1937 and 1942 NFL Championships as well as Super Bowls XVII, XXII, and XXVI. They were leagued runner-up six times losing in 1936, 1940, 1943, and 1945 title games and Super Bowls VII, and XVIII. During their Super Bowl era, Joe Gibbs was the coach. He was such a terrific coach. One of the best in NFL history. They were really good back in their heyday the 1980s. They were one of the best franchises in the NFL. They had three Super Bowls wins during that time tieing the Oakland Raiders, and the Denver Broncos. The team is only behind a few teams in the league with Super Bowls wins. They are behind the Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots with six each, San Francisco 49ers and the Dallas Cowboys with five, and the New York Giants and Green Bay Packers with four. Baltimore Ravens has one more SuperBowl to catch up to the Redskins. I just have to put that in there. Lol. The Redskins had two 10 year spans where they went to championships, 1936-1945 where they went to six NFL Championships and 1982-1991 where they went to four Super Bowls and won three of them.
Redskins was originally owned by George Preston Marshall in 1932. He moved the team to Washington DC in 1937. Not to sound political. The first owner of the Redskins named George Preston Marshall refused to put an African-American football player on their football team. Washington was the last NFL team to integrate. they drafted Ernie Davis of Syracuse, the first black player to win the Heisman trophy. He got traded to Cleveland Browns for running back Bobby Mitchell who later on became a wide receiver in the 1962 draft. The federal government was going to put a suite on them if they don’t integrate during the Kennedy administration.
In 1961, Jack Kent Cooke bought 25% of the Redskins. Then he became the majority owner in 1974 soon as Marshall had a stroke. Then in 1985, he became the sole owner of the team. He died in 1997 after he built a stadium near Landover, MD. He wanted to build a stadium in Laurel, MD so Baltimore does not get a football team. Laurel is right in the middle of Baltimore and Washington, DC. Then the team got sold to Daniel Snyder for $800 million.
The owner is Daniel Snyder, the president is Bruce Allen, and the head coach is Jay Gruden. Redskins haven’t had much success since the Jack Kent Cooke and Joe Gibbs era. They became a mediocre franchise. They are not that franchise who was successful in the late 1930s and early 1940s and the 1980s. The franchise went to several championships during those times.

The Dallas Cowboys are an American football team that plays their games in Dallas-Ft. Worth, Texas (TX) area. The Cowboys compete in the NFL as a member of the NFC East. They play their home games at AT&T Stadium located in Arlington, TX. The Dallas Cowboys headquarters are located in Frisco, TX.
The Dallas Cowboys had some success in the NFL. They have been to eight Super Bowls in their history tied with the Denver Broncos and the Pittsburgh Steelers. They’re behind the New England Patriots who leads the league with eleven Super Bowls and tied with the San Francisco 49ers with five Super Bowl wins. Only Pittsburgh and New England have more Super Bowl win in the league. The Dallas Cowboys are the only team in NFL history that had 20 straight winning seasons (1966-1985) and only missed the playoffs two seasons in that period (1974 and 1984).
The Dallas Cowboys were established back in 1960. They came in as an expansion team. They did not change the name to the Dallas Cowboys from the Texans. The owner of the Dallas Texans moved the team to Kansas City and called them the Chiefs. The Cowboys were originally founded by a Dallas businessman Clinton Williams Murchison Jr. in 1960. He was an oilman. Then in 1984, Harvey Bright along with 11 limited partners purchased the Cowboys off of Clint Murchison for $85 million. They made it to the playoff in his first season losing to the Los Angeles Rams in the first round. Then the next three season they missed the playoffs. He suffered financial loss from his corporation so he sold this franchise to Jerry Jones in 1989 for $140 million. Jones made serious changes to the team including firing longtime head coach Tom Landry. Bright was planning on firing Landry before he sold the team to Jones. They did not have a successor for him to be fired.
When Jone took over, he immediately fired Tom Landry and replaced him with The University of Miami head coach Jimmy Johnson, who was teammates with Jerry Jones at the University of Arkansas. Soon as Jimmy Johnson came in he drafted Troy Aikman from UCLA. Then he traded veteran running back Herschel Walker to the Minnesota Vikings for five veteran players and eight draft picks. The Cowboys finished with their worst record ever 1-15 in 1989. Michael Irvin was already drafted before Jerry Johnson came to the team. He also drafted fullback Darryl Johnston, and center Mark Stepnoski in 1989. In 1990, he drafted Emmitt Smith, in 1991 he drafted defensive tackle Russell Maryland and offensive lineman Erik Williams, and in 1992 he drafted Darren Woodson. That turned into a dynasty and won three Super Bowls in the 1990s. Now Michael Irvin, Emmitt Smith, and Troy Aikman are Hall of Famers.
Since the Troy Aikman era, they have not been as successful. I think they have the capability to be successful, but some management has to change a little. Jerry Jones should be just the owner and hire a general manager and president. He has his son as CEO (chief executive officer). He needs to hire people with a football mine take on those positions. Then get rid of the head coach and hire new people. They are a good organization, but I think Jerry Jones does a little too much.
Right now the owner, president, and general manager is Jerry Jones. The CEO is Stephen Jones, and the head coach is Jason Garrett. Their best success was back in the 1970s and the 1990s. They went to the eight Super Bowls and won five during those times.

Fight song: Fly, Eagles Fly
The Philadelphia Eagles is an American football that is located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (PA). They are an NFL team that competes in the NFC East. They play their home games at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, PA. The headquarters are located at the NovaCare Complex in Philadelphia, PA.
Back in 2017, the Eagles won their only Super Bowl in franchise history against the New England Patriots. The NFC East is the only division in football that has all four of their team won at least one Super Bowl. Philadelphia is added to one of those cities that won a championship in all four of the major sports. Overall Philadelphia has won three more championships (1948, 1949, and 1950).
The Philadelphia Eagles were established back in 1933 as a replacement of the bankrupted Frankford Yellow Jackets when a group led by Bert Bell secure the rights to an NFL franchise in Philadelphia. Then in 1943 the Philadelphia Eagles and the Pittsburgh Steelers merged and called themselves the Phil-Pitt Steagles. The merger was not going to be permanent, they dissolved at the end of the 1943 season. In 1944 the Eagle became serious competitors when the teams separated. Pittsburgh Steelers merged with the Chicago Cardinals. The Eagle had two-second place finishes in 1945 and 1946. They reached their first title game in 1947. Won the championships in 1948, 1949, and 1950.
In 1933 Bert Bell found the Philadelphia Eagle. He was also the head coach. In 1940, he sold the team to Alexis Thompson which became the second era of the Eagles, which was directed by Coach Greasy Neale (Hall of Fame coach). Leonard Tose, who is a long time Eagles fan invested the team into a group called the Happy Hundred a group led by James P. Clark. Tose invested $3000 as one of the one hundred owners to purchase the Philadelphia Eagle from Alexis Thompson in 1949. Tose tried to purchase the team with his own group of investors in 1956 but was not able to do so. Then in December 1963, the team was purchased by Jerry Wolman for $5,505,000 and Tose received $60,000. Then he bought the team in 1969 for $16,155,000, a record for a sports franchise. His first act was to fire head coach Joe Kuharich. He followed that by hiring general manager Pete Retzlaff and head coach Jerry Williams.
In 1976, Tose and his general manager Jimmy Murray lured Dick Vermeil from UCLA to coach the Eagles. Vermeil had one winning season from 1962-1975 at UCLA. Vermeil took the team to the 1980 Super Bowl and lost to the Oakland Raiders. In January 1983, Tose announced that his daughter Susan Fletcher will eventually succeed him as the primary owner of the Eagle. In 1985, Tose had talks with Ralph Wilson on swapping franchises, but that failed. Tose was forced to sell the franchise to Norman Braman and Ed Leibowitz (highly successful automobile dealers from Florida) for $65 million to pay off more than $25 million gambling debt to Atlantic City casinos. Then in 1986, Norman Braman bought out Leibowitz’s share of the team. During Braman’s ownership, the Eagle made it to the playoffs four times out of nine seasons he was the majority owner of the team. They were division champs in 1988.
In 1994, he sold the team to movie producer Jefferey Lurie for $185 million a sports franchise record at the time. Since he owned the team they had some success with Andy Reid at the coach. They made it to the playoffs almost every year and made it to the conference finals and one Super Bowl during his tenure there. They drafted Donovan McNabb at quarterback as their first pick in 1999.
In 2012, Lurie and his wife had a divorce. During their marriage, they had two children son Julian and daughter Milena. When they got their divorce the part of the settlement the wife get a sizable part of the team. In may 2014 he remarried.
Philadelphia went through lots of ownership. The current owner has been there the longest in their 86-year history. They have been there for 25 years now. Here’s what the current situation with the Philadelphia Eagles. The owner, chairman, and CEO is Jeffrey Lurie, the president is Don Smolenski, and the head coach is Doug Pederson. The general manager is Howie Roseman.
The Eagles have a total of four championships including one Super Bowl win, four conference championships, thirteen division championships, and 26 playoff appearances. They have been a successful franchise since the 1980s. They have been in the postseason on a consistent basis.

The New York Giants are an American football that plays their games in the New York City metropolitan area. The Giants compete in the NFL in the NFC East. The plays their home game at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey (NJ), which they share with the New York Jets. Whom I’m going to talk about in the later posts in the future. The Giants headquarters are at the Quest Diagnostic Training Center in East Rutherford, NJ.
The New York Giants are one of the oldest football teams in the NFL. They were established in 1925 and is the only group that is still existed as a football team in the Northeast United States today. The team is ranked third among all NFL franchises with a total of eight championships. They won four in the pre-Super Bowl era (1927, 1934, 1938, and 1956) and four Super Bowls (XXI, XXV, XLII, and XLVI). Super Bowls XLII and XLVI are my third and fourth favorite Super Bowls of all time. You all should what my first two favorites were. Here’s a hint, I’m a Baltimore Ravens fan. The Giants were involved with three of my four favorite Super Bowls if you know what I mean. Philadelphia Eagles were involved with my fifth favorite Super Bowl. Now we’re talking about the Giants. The only teams that have won more championships are the Green Bay Packers with 13 and Chicago Bears with 9 (all championships includes Super Bowl victories also).
They distinguished themselves from the baseball team with the same name. They were incorporated as the New York National League Football Company, Inc. in 1929. In 1937, they changed their name to the New York football Giants. Then in 1957, the baseball team called the New York Giants moved to San Francisco and the football team continues to use the New York football Giants, Inc. The team has acquired several nicknames over the years including Big Blue, G-men, and the Jinx which is frequently used in the New York Post or the New York Daily News.
The New York Giants were founded in 1925 by Timothy Mara with an investment of $500. They legally named the team the New York Football Giants so you do not get mixed up with the baseball team which later moved to San Francisco. Under Tim Mara, he won four championships and seven division titles. Jack Mara inherited the team from his father upon his death in 1959 and co-owned it with his brother Wellington Mara until 1965. Jack Mara died in 1965 of cancer. He was inducted into the New York Ring of Honor in 2010. In 1965, Wellington Mara became the majority owner until his death in 2005. In 1991, Preston Robert Tisch bought 50% of the New York Giants. He owned it until his death in 2005. Under Wellington Mara’s leadership, he won two Super Bowls. In 2005, John Mara inherited the team from his father after his death. He co-owns the team with Steve Tisch, which he inherited his part from his father. Since John Mara and Steve Tisch took over the team, they have won two Super Bowls against the New England Patriots. I just had to write that in there. Lol.
What it seems like with the New York Giants. The team has been in the same family since Tim Mara found the Giants in 1925. I think that’s a good thing. It is good to keep it in the family. They remind me of the Pittsburgh Steelers who keep that team in the family. The co-owners of the team are a set of father and son inheritances with Bob Tisch and Steve Tisch and Wellington Mara and John Mara. What do you think of the future of the Giants? Their sons might take over due to tradition.
The owners of the New York Giants are John Mara and Steve Tisch, the chairman is also Steve Tisch, the president is also John Mara, the general manager is Dave Gettleman, and the head coach is Pat Shurmur. The team won the total of eight championships (4 NFL Championships and 4 Super Bowls). They went to 11 conference championships, 22 divisional championships and had 32 playoff appearances.
I think that the Giants are a good organization. They need to think about getting a new quarterback in the draft. They are a couple of them available to take that could be the future. Eli Manning is getting too old. They can learn under Manning. He’ll be a good teacher and get them prepared to face the dangerous NFC East. Overall, they have not been a good organization since their last Super Bowl. They need to build their team from the bottom up. They traded Odell Beckham Jr. and they still have Saquan Barkley. Now they need to get him some help.
I hope you all read this and learn about the history of your division. I wanted to write about this division because they are lots of good history here. It does not matter if I hate or like the team. I will not say anything negative about the teams or the players.
